Em 06 de janeiro de 1502, os primeiros portugueses da expedição de Gonçalo Coelho aqui chegaram.
Tal como na capital, Rio de Janeiro, os monges beneditinos, os franciscanos e os carmelitas muito contribuíram para a história da cidade com a construção de casas conventuais, assumindo o papel de administração, vigilância e povoamento do espaço.
Paralelamente à ocupação do continente, na terceira década do século XVII, a vila da Ilha Grande já se achava definitivamente instalada no local atual.
Tornou-se inadiável para o governo fortificar a orla marítima para a defesa da população e do território.
Da tradicional Fortaleza do Outeiro do Carmo mandada construir em 1646, nenhum vestígio resta. Outra fortaleza existiu nas vizinhanças do Mosteiro Beneditino (Fortaleza da Ponta de São Bento) e hoje só nos resta a Fortaleza da Ponta do Leme, cuja construção data do século XX.

The history
